Initial Salvo

So, I'm getting into this "blogging" thing really late. It's almost like if I had started to wear MC Hammer pants in 2001. However, I feel like this will be a better outlet for me to bitch about things than yelling at the dude on the 59th St. subway platform who's always playing the Godfather theme on his steel drum.

Anyway, I figured I'd "bless" my blog by putting in an excerpt of an interview from 'The Believer' magazine between two of my favorite writers: Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, Fever Pitch, About a Boy) and David Simon (HBO's The Wire, The Corner, Homicide). This is David Simon talking about his principles of writing:

"My standard for verisimilitude is simple and I came to it when I started to write prose narrative: fuck the average reader. I was always told to write for the average reader in my newspaper life. The average reader, as they meant it, was some suburban white subscriber with two-point-whatever kids and three-point-whatever cars and a dog and a cat and lawn furniture. He knows nothing and he needs everything explained to him right away, so that exposition becomes this incredible, story-killing burden. Fuck him. Fuck him to hell. "

Yes, indeed.

Hi, Thanks for reading! ope you're loving the FCI experience as much as I am. Your blog looks like it will be great, I'm so pathetically comp illiterate it sometimes pains me, but I just want to cook and write, and leave the rest to the geeks! All I have to say about chef Nic, is listen hard, work clean, and occasionally laugh if he makes a joke. He's a sweetheart, and his knife skills are immaculate, so watch him work closely whenever you can. Level 3 is very different from 1 and 2 though, so he may have a different set of standards there. He will probably expect you to know what you're doing for the most part, but he is a tolerant and helpful teacher and will answer any question you have. Level 3 is tough, so try to learn the recipes and procedures, and be ready to execute and pay attention to detail. Good luck, and let me know who you are if we haven't met.
